Lacombe Board Game Club

The Lacombe Board Game Club (L.B.G.C.) is an organization open to all people in the Lacombe and surrounding area. Age is restricted to persons of the age of 15 and above.  Younger persons CAN attend, but must they be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Anyone interested can sign up at the library prior to the 11th March.

- The L.B.G.C. will meet on the first and third Tuesday of every month. Summer and winter holidays may change this. Changes to the schedule will be posted.

- Meetings will be informal, for now. You may bring any material you wish and try to start a "pick-up" game. Later, as members get to know each other, games will be scheduled, but anyone may still attend and take advantage of the space.

- The first Tuesday of the month will be a "war-game/fantasy" night. Historical and fantasy games of longer duration will be prominent. However, other game types may be played on a pick-up basis. 5:30-8:30 (Closing time I believe.)

- The third Tuesday will be "abstract" night. The focus will be on abstract, games, and non-mainstream games. These games will also feature shorter playing times. (15-90 min.) Again, no one will be turned away.

- Meetings will cost about $3 per person to pay for room rental charges. This is non-refundable. (What will be the cost?)

- Library rules for their meeting rooms will apply.  (Noise, food etc.)

FAQ:
Q: Board games? There are only 12 board games or so. Chess, Clue, Monopoly…
A: Actually, there are 20,000 or so. www.boardgamegeek.com .

Q: Is this club open to children?
A: Yes. However, it is not a "baby-sitting" service. A parent of guardian must accompany younger people. Actually, they are encouraged to play!

Q: Is this club open to women?
A: Yes. In fact, the coordinator in charge plays board games with his fiancée. They would love to meet other mature, gaming couples.

Q: War-game?
A: War-game are also called "historical" games. Most war gamers are VERY interested in History and politics, especially the older ones. Many of these games focus on WW II or other conflicts in man's history. They range in scale from dogfight card games, to simulations of an entire conflict. (At varying levels of detail of course.) Personally, I like Axis & Allies and it's related games, but I also like "Attack!".

Q: Is this a chess club?
A: Yes… classic games are fine. However, we would like to focus on themed board game. Historical, fantasy SF or abstract. If you want to teach a classic game to someone, this is the venue.

Q: Abstract?
A: A game that does not model any kind of reality. Chess is technically abstract. So is checkers. Almost any game with a multicolored board and funny looking pieces is an abstract. There are lots of abstract games out there. Come check them out!

Q: Do you like any other games?
A: Settlers of Catan, Fury of Dracula, Last Night on Earth (Zombie), Mr Jack, Risk Godstorm, and the list goes on!

Q: Is this a role-playing game club?
A: Although many gamers are also RPG fans, no. The space is for board games, not RPGs. Sorry. However, you can always recruit for your RPGs here.

Q: Is this a miniature game club?
A: Not exclusively. There is an excellent club in Red Deer www.grots.ca that deal mainly with historical and fantasy miniature gaming. (Painted.) If you wish to bring in your collectable, pre-painted miniatures and try to start a pick-up game, sure! More power too you.

Q: Is this a collectable card game club?
A: No… but bring them in. You might find a player in the down time between games. Please, however, no trading or sale of cards while in the library! Do that on your own time.

Q: Isn't this a waste of time and energy?
A: Any hobby that promotes social skills, reading and problem solving is not a waste of time in my book!

Q: When do we start?
A: Right now. I'll be there.
